The Mission
of the Project is to make the papers of the former Congressman and longest-serving Secretary of State accessible and usable for scholars and the general reader. The project is hosted by the Howard H. Baker, Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville under the Direction of project founder and editor – Bobby R. Holt. The project comprises two phases: The Congressional Series and The Secretary of State Series.
Work on the Congressional Series commenced in January, 2006 with project development and document collection, and pending the appropriation of funding for editorial positions, will conclude in 2010. Two published volumes each will include approximately 450 selected documents reprinted in a modern standardized format with limited editorial interpretation.
The project will fulfill its mission by achieving four goals:
- Gathering the dispersed record of Cordell Hull's professional work from 1907-1955 documenting his roles as Congressman, Senator, Chairman of the Democratic Party, and Secretary of State.
- Publishing selections of his speeches, correspondence and public and private writings in two separate series: The Congressional, 1907-1933 (2 volumes) and The Secretary of State, 1933-1955 (8 volumes).
- Depositing the Hull corpus in the Modern Political Archives (MPA) at the University of Tennessee.
- Facilitating use and knowledge of the editions by leading research, education, and outreach initiatives.
